Harry’s arrival didn’t go to plan. Shortly after he was born, he and his mum Elousia were airlifted from their home in Mackay to Townsville, where Harry required urgent specialist care. It was also discovered that Harry has Down syndrome - marking the beginning of a medical journey his family never expected.
With their newborn in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, they were navigating fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty - while also trying to find a safe place to stay close by. After a distressing experience in unsuitable hotel accommodation, the family turned to Ronald McDonald House Townsville.
For almost five weeks, the House became their home. It provided more than just a room - it offered safety, comfort, a place to prepare meals, and dedicated spaces to support Harry’s early care. Most importantly, it meant they could remain just minutes from his bedside, focusing entirely on being there for their son. Their journey continued back in Mackay, where they again relied on Ronald McDonald House to stay close during ongoing treatment.
Nearly three years later, the family returned to Townsville unexpectedly when Harry suffered a burn injury requiring specialist care. Once again, Ronald McDonald House was there. Through the Family Room in the hospital, support from the Hospitality Cart, and another stay at the House, they were surrounded by care during a difficult time.
Small moments made a big difference - safe spaces for Harry to play and recover, toys delivered by volunteers, and even a birthday celebration during his stay. They remained close to the hospital while Harry healed, with access to the facilities and support needed to care for him.
Across both chapters of Harry’s journey, Ronald McDonald House provided more than just accommodation. It gave this Mackay family stability, comfort, and the ability to stay together during critical moments - something that continues to make a difference when they need it most.
