Emmett's Journey

Townsville local Emmett is a bright and resilient nine-year-old who loves school at St Clare's Catholic School, spending time with his family and making people smile. 

In June 2024, what his parents first thought was a simple case of chickenpox changed their lives. After they noticed unusual spots on his stomach, Emmett was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. 

Within hours, Emmett and his mum were flown to Brisbane so he could begin urgent, life-saving treatment. His dad, Ben, and seven-year-old sister, Poppy, followed soon after. For Emmett, having his family close was not an extra - it was the team he needed behind him. 

While Emmett and his mum stayed at Ronald McDonald House in Brisbane, Ronald McDonald House North Australia continued to support the family through local programs when they returned to North Queensland between treatment blocks. That support helped the family stay connected across a long and exhausting journey, giving them practical care and reassurance when so much else felt uncertain. 

For premature babies facing a long stay in hospital, family is part of the team behind them. Sam and Ben had expert medical care, but they also had their mum nearby - ready to show up, offer comfort and surround them with the familiar love of family. 

For 99 days, the family's journey unfolded between the House and the hospital. Having a safe base nearby gave Kristen somewhere to rest before making the short walk back to her boys. It kept the family connected at a time when distance could easily have made an already difficult experience even harder. 

Sam and Ben were two little heroes taking on a very big beginning. But heroes should never have to face the hard days alone. Behind them was a mum who could be there each day, and behind their family was a community of supporters helping make that closeness possible.
