Harry's Journey
Mackay local Harry has already faced two unexpected medical journeys - and each time, Ronald McDonald House North Australia helped keep his family close.
Harry was born with Down syndrome and needed specialist care in Townsville. On the evening he was born, he and his mum, Elouisa, were airlifted from Mackay, completely unprepared for the days ahead. With Harry in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, his parents were suddenly navigating complex medical conversations while also trying to find safe accommodation near the hospital.
For almost five weeks, Ronald McDonald House Townsville became their home. It gave the family a safe place to sleep, prepare meals and stay only minutes from Harry. A dedicated milk room also allowed Elouisa to pump and safely store breastmilk, helping her begin feeding Harry while he was receiving intensive care. When the family later returned to Mackay, Ronald McDonald House Family Room Mackay Base Hospital supported them for a further two weeks while Harry remained in hospital.
Almost three years later, the family needed help again after Harry suffered a burn injury and was treated through the paediatric burns unit in Townsville. The Hospitality Cart brought small moments of comfort on the ward, while the Family Room offered meals and a welcoming place to pause without being far from his care.
After discharge, Harry still needed to remain close to the hospital for follow-up treatment, so Ronald McDonald House again became home. He was welcomed with toys, play spaces and thoughtful birthday surprises when he turned three. His mum could cook nutritious meals to support his recovery, and the family had peace of mind knowing the burns unit was nearby.
Harry's courage carried him through, but his family was the strength standing behind him. Safe accommodation and practical care meant they could stay together and focus on helping their little hero heal.
