Tobias' Journey

At just four months old, Tobias faced a medical crisis no family could have imagined. 

One night in early September, he woke with a fever. Only the day before, he had been a bright, bubbly baby surrounded by his parents, Katie and Steven, and his three older siblings. When a rash appeared, his parents called an ambulance. Within hours, Tobias was admitted to Cairns Base Hospital and then transported with his mum to Townsville University Hospital. 

The diagnosis was meningococcal disease. To save his life, doctors needed to amputate both his arms and legs. For Katie and Steven, the decision was devastating, but their focus was clear: give Tobias every chance to live. 

As their little boy fought through illness and surgery, Ronald McDonald House North Australia gave the family stability, care and a place to stay just minutes from the hospital. For the next six months, Katie and Steven could remain close to Tobias, while his older siblings were able to visit and stay connected with their baby brother. 

The House offered more than accommodation. Meals, practical support, warm welcomes and a community of people who understood helped carry the family through days of fear and uncertainty. Katie later described it simply as 'a lifesaver'. 

Tobias is now home with his family, embracing his new normal. His courage is remarkable, but he did not face the journey alone. Behind this little hero was a family showing up every day - holding hope, making difficult decisions and surrounding him with love. 

That is what keeping families close makes possible. It means parents can be at a child's bedside, siblings can remain part of the journey, and families can find strength in one another when they need it most.
