Help our Little Heroes 2025

On 25 March 2025, Luke (8yo) was hit by a ute while crossing the road on his way home from school in a “no-fault” accident where he and the driver didn’t see each other until it was too late. In the accident Luke sustained significant injuries, including a fractured fibula and tibia in both legs, fractured scapula, fractured skull, fractured T-spine, torn ligament in his C-spine, Grade 5 rupture to his spleen, a pneumothorax in his left lung, gastroparesis and road burn up his back, on his left ankle and left elbow.

The paramedics attended promptly and helped to stabilise Luke before rushing him to Mackay Base Hospital Emergency department, where he required a few blood transfusions before transfer to ICU where his spleen stabilised enough for him to be air lifted by the Royal Flying Doctor to Townsville University Hospital (TUH) ICU. Luke was in ICU for a week before transferring onto the ward in TUH. The Royal Flying Doctor then performed a Hospital Transfer to take Luke back to Mackay Base Hospital where he spent another week before being able to discharge and start his journey to recovery at home.

Luke has made an incredible recovery. While he still has some restrictions on what he is allowed to do as his body recovers and specialists assess any longer lasting impacts, he has been incredibly brave and continues from strength to strength, making a full return to school this term.

Ronald McDonald House Charities have made an enormous positive impact on our recovery journey. In Townsville, they were there in our darkest hour when we arrived at the Hospital in the plane with nothing but the clothes we were wearing. They had a room that I could stay in which allowed family to come and support us and Luke’s 6yo brother to come and stay with us. They had incredible facilities that meant we didn’t need to worry about anything other than turning up for Luke and being by his side.

The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Townsville and Mackay provided an incredible service that completely changed our hospital stay by allowing Luke’s friends, brother and step-sister to come and spend time with him, boosting his strength, giving him something to look forward to each day and helping him and his brother to feel more at home, alleviating some of the stress of hospital life. They were equipped with food, drink, books, games and toys so that we could play and eat together and spend precious moments with our loved ones. We are incredibly thankful for their service and this amazing cause.
